About this neighbourhood
Wîhkwêntôwin (Oliver) is a mature, densely populated neighbourhood located immediately to the west of the desirable downtown core within Edmonton. Originally, this neighbourhood was early Edmonton’s west end, but this area experienced significant redevelopment as the city grew. This included building apartments and condominiums and redeveloping the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific rail yards as strip shopping centres.
According to the 2021 Federal Census, 17.5% of the population of Wîhkwêntôwin (Oliver) is aged 65 years and over. In comparison, the rate for this age demographic in Edmonton stands at 13.0% of the population.
The most common type of residence in Wîhkwêntôwin (Oliver) is low and high-rise apartment buildings. Apartments (five-storeys and up) accounts for 67.5% and apartments (four-storeys and under) accounts for 30.7% of the structures, according to the 2021 Federal Census. 48.4% of private dwellings were constructed within the neighbourhood between 1961 and 1980.
This community has been chosen for Edmonton’s Neighbourhood Renewal Program. As of 2024, the planning and design for rehabilitating its streets and sidewalks is underway.

Being just off of Jasper Avenue and 109 Street, Wîhkwêntôwin (Oliver) offers easy access to ETS bus routes, restaurants, grocery stores, medical clinics, pharmacies, services, and shopping. In addition, the Royal Alexandra Hospital is only a ten-minute drive away.
The High Level Bridge Streetcar and Jasper Plaza light transit rail are right next door to the Apartments. In addition, this neighbourhood contains the Jewish Seniors Centre, the Edmonton Seniors Centre, the Wîhkwêntôwin Community League, and many places of worship. Being adjacent to the North Saskatchewan River Valley, this area has easy access to many parks and walking trails. This includes Victoria Golf Course and Victoria Park.
Being next to the Downtown neighbourhood, the Apartments have easy access to a number of districts, including the Arts District, ICE District, and the Alberta Legislature Grounds of Government Centre.
The new Valley Line West LRT Transit Line is in development in the area.
